How to use this tip calculator
This tool is built to calculate tip quickly without switching apps or doing mental math. All fields work together and results update instantly as you type.
- Enter the bill amount before tip. You can include cents. The field accepts decimals and blocks negative values.
- Choose a tip percentage. Tap a preset such as 10, 15, 18, 20 or 25 percent, or type a custom value like 12.5 in the custom tip field.
- Set the number of people if you want to split the bill. Leave it at 1 if you are paying alone.
- Select currency to format results correctly. The calculation does not change, only the symbol and decimal formatting.
- Optional: enable round up if you prefer to pay a whole number total. The calculator rounds the total up and adjusts the tip accordingly.
Use Reset to clear all inputs and return to the default 15 percent. If you need help or want to suggest an improvement, visit our Contact page.
Tip calculator formula with step by step math
Every result comes from four simple formulas. Understanding them helps you verify the numbers on any receipt.
- Tip amount = Bill x (Tip percentage / 100)
- Total to pay = Bill + Tip amount
- Per person tip = Tip amount / Number of people
- Per person total = Total to pay / Number of people
Step by step example
Take a bill of 86.40 with a tip percentage of 18 percent for 2 people:
- Convert the percentage: 18 / 100 = 0.18
- Calculate tip: 86.40 x 0.18 = 15.552, which rounds to 15.55
- Calculate total: 86.40 + 15.55 = 101.95
- Split the tip: 15.55 / 2 = 7.78 per person
- Split the total: 101.95 / 2 = 50.98 per person when rounded to cents
If round up is enabled, the total becomes 102.00 and the tip adjusts to 102.00 - 86.40 = 15.60. For more about how this tool is built and maintained, read About Online Tip Calculator.
How much to tip by situation
Tipping customs vary by country, city and type of service. The notes below are general guidance only, not rules. Always check your bill for an included service charge and follow local practice when you travel.
Restaurant table service
For sit down restaurants, many diners choose a tip percentage based on service and local norms. If service is not included, a tip is often left at the table or added to the card total. If a service charge is already printed on the bill, an extra tip is usually optional. When service is quick or counter based, some people tip a smaller amount or skip the tip, depending on the country.
Food delivery
For delivery, people often consider distance, weather and order size. A flat amount or a small percentage of the order subtotal is common in places where delivery tipping is customary. In some regions, delivery fees do not go to the driver, so a separate tip is how you thank the driver directly. If you are unsure, ask locally or check the app checkout screen for guidance.
Taxi and rideshare
For taxis and rideshare trips, tipping is common in some countries and less expected in others. When you do tip, you can round up the fare or add a small percentage. For a short ride, rounding up to the next whole unit is a simple option. For a longer ride or help with luggage, you might choose a higher percentage.
Salon and barbershop
For haircuts, coloring or barber services, clients who tip often base it on service and appointment length. The tip is usually calculated on the service price before retail products. If more than one person provides the service, you can split the tip or tip each provider separately.
Hotel services
For hotels, tipping practices differ widely. Common situations include luggage help, housekeeping and concierge assistance. Tips for these services are often small flat amounts per bag, per night or per task, rather than a percentage. Check local customs, as some hotels include a service charge in the room rate.
Remember that these are general ideas. If you are traveling, a quick search for the specific city or a note at the venue will give you the most accurate local expectation. Our Disclaimer explains that the calculator provides estimates only.
Tip splitting and round up guidance
Splitting the bill is useful for groups, shared dinners and work lunches. This calculator divides both the tip and the total equally. That approach keeps the math fair, because each person pays the same share of the tip they helped create.
- Equal split: Enter the number of people. Everyone pays the same per person total. This works best when the bill is shared evenly.
- Unequal orders: If one person ordered much more, calculate the full total first, then divide manually based on what each person ordered.
- Large groups: Some restaurants add an automatic gratuity for big parties. Check the bill first so you do not tip twice.
Round up is helpful when you want to avoid coins or small change. For example, a total of 47.30 rounded up becomes 48.00. The displayed tip will increase slightly to cover the difference. In currencies without cents, such as JPY, totals are already whole numbers, so round up may have no effect on already rounded results.
You can combine split and round up. The tool rounds the full total first, then divides the rounded total and the adjusted tip by the number of people. Learn how your data is handled when you use these features in our Privacy Policy.
Worked examples across different currencies
The calculation stays the same in any currency. Only the symbol and number formatting change. Here are four examples you can test in the calculator above.
| Bill | Tip % | People | Tip | Total | Per person total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| USD 64.00 | 15% | 1 | USD 9.60 | USD 73.60 | USD 73.60 |
| EUR 120.00 | 10% | 3 | EUR 12.00 | EUR 132.00 | EUR 44.00 |
| GBP 84.60 | 18% | 2 | GBP 15.23 | GBP 99.83 | GBP 49.92 |
| JPY 5000 | 10% | 2 | JPY 500 | JPY 5500 | JPY 2750 |
Try changing the currency selector to see the same math formatted for INR, CAD, AUD, AED, SGD and other options. The per person values help you tell friends exactly what to pay without extra messages.
Common mistakes: tip on pre-tax vs post-tax total
A frequent question is whether to calculate tip on the amount before tax or on the final amount that includes tax and fees.
- Tip on pre-tax subtotal: Many people apply the tip percentage to the food and drink subtotal before sales tax or VAT is added. This is a common approach in the United States and a few other places.
- Tip on post-tax total: Others apply the percentage to the total printed at the bottom of the bill, which already includes tax or service fees. The tip will be slightly higher this way.
- How to decide: Look at your receipt. If it shows a clear subtotal, tax and total, you can enter either the subtotal or the total into the calculator, depending on which base you prefer. There is no single global rule.
Other mistakes to avoid include tipping on top of an included service charge, forgetting to adjust the number of people before reading the per person total, and typing the tip as a decimal like 0.15 instead of 15. The custom tip field expects a percent value, so enter 15 for fifteen percent. For details on how estimates should be used, see our Terms of Use.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate tip for my bill?
Multiply your bill by your tip percentage divided by 100, then add that tip to the bill to get the total. For example, 80 dollars at 15 percent is 12 dollars tip and 92 dollars total. This page does it live and also shows per person amounts.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Both methods are used. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal gives a slightly smaller tip, while tipping on the post-tax total gives a slightly larger tip. Check your receipt for subtotal and tax lines, then enter the base you want to use.
How do I split the bill fairly between people?
Enter the number of people in the people field. The tool divides the tip and the total equally and shows per person tip and per person total. For uneven orders, use the total as a starting point and adjust individual shares.
What does the round up feature do?
It rounds the total up to the next whole currency unit and shows an adjusted tip equal to the rounded total minus your original bill. Use it when you want to pay a round figure without coins.
Can I change the currency?
Yes. Open the currency dropdown and choose your currency. The tip math does not change, only the formatting of the results.
Is my bill amount saved or sent anywhere?
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. No bill amount or tip percentage is collected, stored or sent to a server. Read more in our Privacy Policy.
